LiSoG>>Kick Off: Linux Benchmark Suite for Desktop PCs
LiSoG cooperations project to define and develop a Linux benchmark suite for desktop systems: LiSoG>>Kick Off on November 7, 2007, 10am to 5pm in Stuttgart.
European law requires the phrasing of tenders to be independent of producers and suppliers. As a result benchmarks are gaining importance, particularly in the public sector, as a means of documenting IT system specifications.
A common benchmark for desktop systems is Bapco SYSmark Benchmark. However this benchmark only supports Windows operating systems and focuses on Microsoft products for its software performance tests.
To be able to take open source products into account, we also need a benchmark suite for Linux in the area desktop PCs. The term "desktop" covers both desktop systems and laptops. For this purpose, LiSoG has initiated a cooperations project to define and develop a Linux benchmark suite for desktop systems.
Participants will define the the requirements of a Linux benchmark suite to comply with the legal specifications of the European Union in the course of the LiSoG>>Kick Off event. The goal of the workshop is to define specifications for the benchmark suite for office productivity, open source applications and typical work flows (performance scenarios). These user categories cover the classic office system, eg. working with documents, email, calendars and browsers.
Please note that the event will be in German.
Audience:
- organizations and companies who want to invite tenders for their desktop systems on a non-product related basis
- organizations and companies who want a Linux benchmark as reference for their office system
- desktop hardware suppliers, Linux distributors
